Stud Welding

SDS have 8 mobile stud welding rigs and over 20 directly employed CSCS operatives, trained specifically to carry out the stud welding element of the steel construction works.

Thru deck stud welding is a process of welding shear connectors through steel deck onto a steel structure. It is used to create composite floors or bridges that combine the strength of steel and concrete.

This method is commonly used in construction and industrial applications where a secure and reliable connection is required.

Thru-Deck Stud Welding offers several advantages, such as speed and efficiency, as it allows for quick installation of 19mm shear studs without the need for additional heavy duty steel fasteners such as the Hilti ENP-19 nails.

Steel Decking Supply & Installation - Stud Deck Services

To install thru deck shear studs, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Shear studs
  • Welding equipment
  • Appropriate safety gear (safety glasses, gloves, air-fed mask (RPE)

  • Stud Welding Gun
  • Stud Welding Machine
  • Ceramic Thru-Deck Ferrules
  • Welding Cable

Here is a step-by-step guide to installing thru deck shear studs:

1. Prepare the deck: Ensure that the surface of the deck is clean and free from debris. If necessary, use suitable blower to remove any dirt or dust.

2. Determine the layout: Plan the placement of the shear studs & ceramic ferrules according to the engineering specifications and requirements. Measure and mark the locations where the studs will be installed.

3. Weld the studs: Using a welding machine, weld the shear studs to the deck. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific welding process and settings. Make sure to wear appropriate safety gear during the welding process.

4. Inspect the installation: Once the studs are welded, visually inspect the installation to ensure that they are securely attached to the deck. Check for any signs of improper welding or loose studs.

5. Complete the installation: Once the inspection is complete and you are satisfied with the installation, you can proceed with any additional steps as required by the project or engineering specifications.

Note: It’s important to consult the project’s engineering specifications and follow any specific guidelines provided by the manufacturer of the thru deck shear studs for accurate and safe installation.
